Skin folds or skinfolds are areas of skin where it folds. It may be produced either by individual development of an organism or by an arbitrary application of force to the skin, either by the actions of the muscles of the body or by an external force, e.g., gravity.
Types
There are two common types of face folds:
-
Nasolabial folds: are the deep wrinkles or lines that form from the bottom of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Age, sun damage, and smoking are considered to be the biggest causes of deepening nasolabial folds. Weight gain or loss and side sleeping can play a significant role as well.
-
Epicanthal fold: is the skin of the upper eyelid that covers the inner corner of the eye. The fold runs from nose to the inner side of the eyebrow. Epicanthal folds may be normal for people of Asiatic descent and some non-Asian infants. However, it may also be due to certain medical conditions.
Treatments
-
Fillers: are most often the first step toward reducing nasolabial folds to add volume to the area and lifts the skin. What type of filler and how much is used depends on the severity of the fold. However, fillers are a short-term solution. The last 6 months to 2 years, with most lasting 6 to 9 months. How long a filler lasts depends on the type of filler and how quickly your body dissolves it.
-
Skin tightening: If loose skin is the cause of unwanted nasolabial folds, dermatologists, or skincare professionals may also use a skin-tightening treatment. These can include a fractional radiofrequency device, ultrasound, or a fractional laser.
